The climate of the earth is always changing but most experts believe that the current rate of global warming is being caused by human behaviour. Extra greenhouse gases emitted by industry, transportation and our very own homes are thought to pose the strongest threat to the world.
We all need to play our part in preserving our planet and minimising the potentially devastating effects of climate change. In the UK, around twenty-eight per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions released into the atmosphere come from the energy used to run our homes. Every household in the UK creates around six tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
In fact, the average home is responsible for more harmful carbon dioxide emissions than the average car produces every year. Alternative energy sources, including solar power, help to slow down global warming and the time to act is now.
As if this wasn't enough of an incentive, there is another reason to incorporate renewable energy into your home:
The Energy Crisis
- During the last 3 years alone, average domestic gas bills have risen a massive 94% and electricity bills by 60%. These increases have resulted in combined energy bills in excess of £1000 in the average home. (Source: Energywatch)
- The UK currently imports more than 15% of its gas and oil supplies
- On 3rd January 2008, the price of oil peaked at $100.05 per barrel. In September 2003 it was just $25.
- 65% of global oil reserves are in the volatile Middle East.
- “Wholesale energy costs have risen by nearly 80% in the past year.” (Source: BBC, 24th July 2006)
Your energy bills continue to rise because our current source of energy, fossil fuels, are rapidly running out. Oil and Gas are becoming increasingly rare commodities, predominately controlled by a small number of unstable countries.
Fossil Fuels are not renewable, and pollute planet earth, which brings us back to:
The Green Debate
- 2006 was the warmest year ever recorded since records began in 1659.
- July 2006 was the warmest month on record, with an average temperature of 19.7 degrees celsius.
- The duration of sunshine over the country in July 2006 was 13% higher than the average for the year.
- Amazingly, 2007 is expected to be even warmer. Did you notice the unusually mild beginning of the year?
- Four out of the five hottest years ever recorded have occurred in the last ten years.
- Since 1945 the concentration of carbon dioxide in the earths atmosphere has increased by about 40%.
Global warming is a serious problem. The temperature of the earth is rising and this trend is expected to produce an increase of at least 3 degrees over the next century. The overwhelming consensus of opinion in the scientific world is that our energy rich lifestyle is causing this rise. Fossil fuels, like oil and gas, release harmful carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere, trapping sunlight and producing the greenhouse effect.
We must all act now. Investment in solar energy will make a significant contribution towards reducing your carbon footprint and saving our planet. Call 0800 8766995 or fill in our online form.
